Once in a while you’ll hear the phrase “shooting from the hip” when talking about street photography. Some purists find this method to be dishonest, or cheap or unprofessional.

Is it really that bad?

Back in the day, when TLR’s were used by photographers like Vivian Maier, the shots were made from the hip…. is she a bad photographer now? Does it makes her work less impressive?

“Shooting from the hip” is a phrase, it doesn’t mean that you have to shoot from the actual hip… it just means – not looking through the viewfinder. If you are using the same focal length all the time, it ‘s very easy to master the coverage and composition without looking via the viewfinder.

Lesya's avatarLesya Liu

He is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century and the father of street photography.

Термин “решающий момент”, часто связанный с ним, означает, что если фотографии были бы засняты на долю секунды раньше или позже, иликомпозиция была бы немного отличной, изображения выглядели…

I purposely didn’t research Cunningham prior to the showing as I wanted to watch with no expectations or bias going in.

Bill Cunningham works out of New York City and has been doing so since around the 1960’s just when street fashion was really booming. He has made a huge contribution to fashion photojournalism with his photos of celebrities & socialites as well as passers-by wearing…
