Here’s a shot I really like but I can’t remember taking at all. It’s on one of my negative strips from the ’70s so I’ll claim it. Its either Central Park or somewhere in Europe, Hyde Park in London or Strauss Park in Vienna (in 1972).
There’s a little arcade that traverses 85th to 86th Street, midway between Lexington and Third Avenues. At some point in my early teens I would stand a little ways in, training my camera on the passersby on 86th Street. When one of them happened to glance in to the arcade I snapped a picture. Here is one such.

This is a HUGE topic that will be difficult to do justice to but if the question is why? Then here’s a brief answer. I might add that this question (at the moment anyway) only applies to higher end compacts, micro four/thirds and DSLR cameras. If you are using a smartphone or a compact that doesn’t give you the option of shooting in raw, then jpeg it is then. So firstly why raw? Raw is digital negative that retains all the information that the camera sensor can see but needs post processing to get the best out of it. So if you want a outstanding image and are prepared to put in the time in front of a computer to get it then shoot raw. Secondly why jpeg? This depends on what you will be doing it with it. So, Where do I start??
The past month has been a very bizarre one for me. I’ve always been very sure of my future regarding photography. I was going to move to London once I graduate, work as an assistant for X amount of years then get signed to a agency doing fashion and portrait photography. Being someones bitch, eventually make megga bucks and live happy off champagne. Sounded good to me!
However. I went to work at the Guardian newspaper early February with the picture assistant (Who is the loveliest person you’ll meet, in fact, they all are!) and they asked to look at my portfolio, so naturally showed them my fashion work which I got great feedback from.
