Get on the street

marielemelin's avatarFor the love of photography

So, I started this workshop about photography (techniques in general), and oh surprise to me, it is especially about street photography. Very interesting, learned tons of stuff but really, to do that kind of photo, it takes guts… You learn a lot, the hard way. To get the best shots, you kinda have to go in people’s face – without any mutual consent – well at least close enough so you can see some emotion. I was not so comfortable, too scared to get punched in the face! Even though, here are some of the pictures I took. Also, here is a link to the Facebook page of Ali Saadi, who gave the workshop.Workshop 2012-1 (2)Workshop 2012-2Workshop 2012-4Workshop 2012-9DSC_0143

… A few shots from last week.  It feels good to be settled in and starting to work on the streets of Boston once again.  I am very excited to be back and begin a new life here with my fiancee.

Bill Cunningham New York (Film Review)

“The wider world perceives fashion as frivolity that should be done away with. The point is that fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you can do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization.” – Bill Cunningham

After recently wanting to find out more about prominent photographers as part of my own learning process, a local independent theatre was showing a film about a street fashion photographer by the name of Bill Cunningham. I purposely didn’t research Cunningham prior to the showing as I wanted to watch with no expectations or bias going in.

Bill Cunningham works out of New York City and has been doing so since around the 1960’s just when street fashion was really booming. He has made a huge contribution to fashion photojournalism with his photos of celebrities & socialites as well as passers-by wearing…

Candid About Portraits

David Hoffman's avatarPhoto Widget - David Hoffman's Photo Blog

When I was younger, I seriously considered making a career out of photojournalism. At the time I was both a cub reporter and photographer for our local weekly newspaper, the Pacifica Tribune. I would be sent on assignment to cover high school sporting events, City Council meetings, even the occasional house fire. It was fun, and perhaps I even romanticized it a bit at the time – staying up late developing and printing photos, occasionally snapping a really good shot that made the front page, and more importantly, feeling as though I was “doing” something when most of my peers had no idea what they wanted to do or be when they grew up.

Time passed, and my career as a photojournalist faded like a poorly fixed print. Years later I found myself once again behind the lens, focusing on interesting people and places. But something had changed. I no…

People Photos

Dean's avatarDean Mejos

People are always an interesting subject to take photos of and this post is all about their photos.  My professional work has blessed me with many friends and I always appreciate their presence and company.  At the same time, I’ve also been blessed with opportunities to capture a moment of their life and preserve it in a photo.  These are just some of the photos of people I’ve taken through the years and as far as photography goes, neither is there a single theme nor style present in all of them.  Perhaps I could simply refer to these as snapshots of people that I’ve encountered during those times that I had my camera along with me.  While I was digging through my files to pick out my favorites, I was reminded of the events which took place during the time that these photos were taken.  People photography may be challenging…
